Well, Sir, I see it like this. If the creator of something (Admittedly others had input)decides a revision to their work is warranted how can anyone else claim the revision was not better? They can certainly claim they like somthing better, but that's abput it.

The current / March 2012 issue on page 15 has a story about Master Benny Teh in Malaysia who is part of the IOTF under GM Len Kirschbaum (resume here: www.officialblackdragonfightingsociety.com/Bio/Grand%20Master%20Len%20G.%20Kirschbaum.html) He lists association with General Choi and at one time on a website he stated that he was promoted to 9th Dan by General Choi in 1997. (That info no longer seems to be posted anywhere) A while ago someone put together a list of ITF BBs which is far from complete since it only lists about 750 BBs with some promotion dates and Dan numbers. It would be nice to see how GM Kirschbaum fits into this listing. Anyone have more info?

"It is like a finger pointing to the moon. If you focus on the finger you will miss all that heavenly glory." - Bruce Lee
As a learning tool the textbook applications are very good ways to focus on angles, distance. Balance, Speed efficiency and power. Now, once you can move in that fashion, how you apply the motion is limited only by your imagination and practical considerations.
This is not a new concept. Think "Karate Kid" movies "Wax on..." "Pick up jacket..." First he was taught how to move. Then he was taught the application(S).
So, IMNSHO if you focus too closely on any application(s) be it textbook, "Real" or "Alternate" you will miss all that heavenly glory.
Hmm. I think an article is coming:)

The first issue is that the term hs been devalued. It has gone from 7th Dan downward to whatever. In "Living the Martial Way" the author criticises a certain unnamed but well know org. for reducing the rank awarded this title. His basic argument whch I find logical was that before the title should be issued one should have a required knowledge of the entire system.
Now, if you are in a system that say teaches new patterns up to X Dan how can you possibly be a "Master" if you are a rank below that at which the final material is taught?
So, the real answer to your query is the title means nothing today.
